Visa debit only: the UK credit card ban
Since 14 April 2020, the UK Gambling Commission has banned gambling with credit cards. The ban followed the Commission’s review of gambling with credit, and it covers all online and offline gambling apart from lotteries bought in person. In practice that means every card transaction at a UK-licensed casino must be a debit card — if a site offers to take your Visa credit card, it is not operating under a UKGC licence and you should avoid it.
The ban also closed the obvious side door: UKGC casinos may only accept e-wallet deposits where the wallet itself blocks credit card funding for gambling, so you can’t route a credit card through Skrill or Neteller to get around it.
How do casinos know which card you’re holding? The first digits of your card number (the BIN) identify the issuing bank and whether the card is debit, credit or commercial, and UK cashiers check this automatically before the payment is even attempted. There’s no box to tick and nothing to declare — a credit card is simply declined at the cashier. The useful flip side: if your Visa debit card is being declined at a licensed casino, the ban isn’t the reason. It’s usually a gambling block on your bank account (more on that below) or a mistyped card number.
That leaves Visa debit as the default choice for most UK players, and for good reason: no separate account to open, no extra verification layer, and full eligibility for welcome offers.
Deposits with Visa debit
Deposits are instant. Enter your card number, expiry and CVV in the cashier, confirm the amount, and the funds appear in your casino balance immediately. 3-D Secure — Visa Secure, formerly Verified by Visa — means your bank will usually ask you to approve the payment in your banking app the first time you deposit at a new site, which adds thirty seconds, not days.
Minimum deposits vary more than most guides admit. At the casinos listed above, the floor runs from £1 at NetBet — one of the few genuine £1 deposit casinos in the UK — through £5 at William Hill Vegas, up to the standard £10 tier that covers the rest: Zodiac, Luxury Casino, UK Casino Club, Spin Casino, JackpotCity, Prime Slots and the Jumpman sites among them. Watch the gap between the deposit minimum and the bonus minimum, though. NetBet takes £1, but its welcome offer requires a £10 deposit; William Hill Vegas takes £5, but you’ll need to deposit and stake £10 to trigger its Bonus Spins. If you’re depositing small on purpose, our £5 minimum deposit page breaks down which offers still work at the low end.
Two practical notes. First, your bank statement will show the casino operator’s name — worth knowing if you share an account. Second, most UK banks now offer a gambling block in their app; if you’ve enabled it, card deposits will be declined until you switch it off, and switching it off deliberately involves a cooling-off delay — 48 hours at Revolut, for example, and similar windows elsewhere. That delay is a feature, not a fault.
Withdrawals and payout times
Withdrawals go back to the same Visa debit card you deposited with — casinos enforce this closed loop as an anti-money-laundering measure, so don’t expect to deposit by card and cash out to a different account. After the casino approves the withdrawal (a few hours to 24 hours at the sites above), the money travels one of two ways:
Standard card refund rail: the transfer typically takes 1–3 working days to land, and this is still the default at many sites.
Visa Direct: the faster route, used by a growing share of UK casinos. Instead of a refund, the casino pushes an Original Credit Transaction (OCT) straight to your card. Under Visa’s Fast Funds rules, participating banks commit to making the money available within 30 minutes of approving the transaction — and many UK debit card issuers participate. Two honest caveats, both from Visa’s own scheme documentation: banks that don’t participate in Fast Funds can still take up to two business days to post the funds, and the 30-minute clock only starts after the casino has finished its own processing. A “Visa Direct casino” with a 24-hour pending queue is still a 24-hour casino. The cashier’s stated withdrawal times are the number that matters; the rail only decides what happens after approval.
Before your first withdrawal, every UKGC casino must complete identity verification (KYC). Uploading clear ID and proof of address when you register, rather than at cash-out, avoids the most common payout delay — a stuck first withdrawal is almost always a document problem, not a Visa problem.
Fees and bonus eligibility
None of the casinos listed above charge fees on Visa debit deposits or withdrawals. UK debit transactions also carry no cash-advance charges — that was a credit card problem, and the ban buried it. Your bank treats a casino deposit on Visa debit as an ordinary purchase.
Bonus eligibility is where Visa debit quietly earns its place. Debit cards qualify for welcome offers everywhere, while UK casinos frequently exclude e-wallets such as Skrill and Neteller from their sign-up promotions. Wallets carry their own running costs too — Skrill’s fee page lists currency conversion at up to 3.99%, plus an inactivity fee after six months. If a welcome bonus matters to you, a Visa deposit is the safest way to qualify, at no cost on either end.
When another method beats Visa debit
Visa debit is the sensible default, not the answer to everything. Three cases where something else wins:
- You don’t want card details near a gambling site. Paysafecard is a prepaid voucher bought with cash or online — you hand the casino a 16-digit PIN and nothing else. The trade-off is that it’s deposit-only, so you’ll still need a route for withdrawals.
- You want the fastest possible payout and don’t care about bonuses. E-wallet withdrawals at Skrill and Neteller land as soon as the casino approves them, with no bank leg at all. You give up welcome-offer eligibility at most sites and take on the wallets’ own fees, so this only makes sense for regular players who withdraw often.
- Your debit card is a Mastercard. The picture is nearly identical — same ban, same debit-only rule, same timings — with one or two operator-level quirks covered on our Mastercard debit page.
PayPal support at UK casinos is patchier than the big-brand logos suggest, and where it is offered it usually shares the e-wallet bonus exclusions — check the individual casino’s terms before assuming it qualifies.
Responsible gambling
Set a deposit limit in your casino account before you play — every UKGC casino must offer one — and consider your bank’s gambling block as a second, independent control, since it works at the card level across every site at once. If you want to stop entirely, GamStop self-exclusion covers all UK-licensed casinos in one registration. UK players must be 18 or older. Free, confidential support is available from BeGambleAware and GamCare. #Ad
Visa casino FAQs
Can I use a Visa credit card at a UK online casino?
No. The UKGC banned credit card gambling on 14 April 2020, and licensed cashiers detect and decline credit cards automatically. Any casino that accepts your Visa credit card is unlicensed in the UK.
How long do Visa debit withdrawals take?
Casino approval takes a few hours to 24 hours at the sites listed above. After that, standard card withdrawals take 1–3 working days, while casinos using Visa Direct can pay out much faster — Visa’s Fast Funds rules require participating banks to release the funds within 30 minutes of approval.
What is the minimum Visa deposit at a UK casino?
£10 is the standard at most UKGC casinos. On our list, NetBet accepts card deposits from £1 and William Hill Vegas from £5 — though both set £10 minimums for their welcome offers.
Do UK casinos charge fees on Visa payments?
None of the casinos listed here charge deposit or withdrawal fees on Visa debit, and because credit cards are banned there are no cash-advance charges either. Any fee would come from your own bank, which is rare for UK debit transactions.
